World Population Day
Pledge for healthcare of our Girl Child
Under its flagship programme of women empowerment ‘Swabhiman’, Smile Foundation celebrated the empowerment of women and adolescent girls from 10 urban slums of Delhi. Swabhiman as the name stands means dignity and self respect. The programme aims at bringing improvement in significant part of the population group i.e. Women and Adolescent Girls. The goal of the programme is to help community women live an independent and dignified life.

Under the guidance of Swabhiman Team at Smile Foundation, all partners namely The Health & Care Society, Navsrishti, Sahyogita and ADHAAR celebrated World Population Day by organizing a creative competition based on Pamphlets/Sign Boards/Wall Writings/Posters involving Project Coordinators/CHEs/SHVs and Peer Educators. Community women and Adolescent Girls were involved too.
Various themes that were selected for the competition included reproductive health Issues like Female foeticide, safe motherhood, family planning, early marriage and its health consequences, etc. The competition saw an active participation of approximately 200 community women and girls. It revealed how conscientiously they have imbibed the concerns related to various such issues since, last one year.
The best entry would be rewarded/awarded and would be sent for printing or publication under Swabhiman Project. Respective NGOs and individuals would be acknowledged very soon for making their contribution in the same.

Swabhiman organized a meeting for its stakeholders
Swabhiman endeavors to empower the underprivileged women and adolescents in the community and inculcate a health seeking behavior amongst them by creating awareness on issues concerning Reproductive Health and safe motherhood practices. The project is an initiative of Smile Foundation and is supported by the Population Foundation of India.

With the objective of enhancing the involvement of stakeholders in the project,
Smile foundation under its Swabhiman project held meetings from 11th to 18th Dec’07 with the stakeholders of the project in select urban slum pockets of East and South Delhi. The Aaganwadi Supervisors, the Auxiliary Nurse Maids, the Balwadi teachers, the Pradhan of the community, the local Doctors, community leaders and various other influential people of the vicinity participated in the meetings. Various documents and publications of the project were shared with the stakeholders of the project to ensure their wholehearted involvement in the implementation phase of the project. The meetings ended on a happy note with stakeholders committing cent per cent participation in the project. Smile Foundation is also networking with other civil society partners working in the areas, link up and utilize their expertise or other services like non formal education, nutrition etc. to support the project. |
